Hypnotherapy helps 90% of IBS Sufferers according to recent study

Greater use of hypnotherapy to ease the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome would help sufferers and might save money, says a gastroenterologist.

Dr Roland Valori, editor of Frontline Gastroenterology, said of the first 100 of his patients treated, symptoms improved significantly for nine in 10

In the report which can be found on BBC News - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8572818.stm - Dr Valori audited patients sent to hypnotherapy for IBS and found that 4 out of every 10 reported symptoms had completely stopped after their course of hypnotherapy had finished with a further 5 out of 10 feeling much more in control of their sysmptoms.

IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrone affects around one in five people in the UK. The actual cause is not known but it is known to affect the gut area of the body, Stress, a bout of gastroenteritis, or even a course of antibiotics can trigger the condition. Many people also suffer from bloating and stabbing pains in their abdomen caused by spasms in their gut. Some, too, develop symptoms such as nausea or lethargy.

Dr Valori started sending IBS patients to hypnotherapy in the 1990s though studies in the effectivesness of hypnotherapy and IBS have been around since the 1980s. He audited the first 100 patients sent and the details above show around 90% of those treated with hypnotherapy had either no symptoms or were more in control of their symptoms after completing the sessions.

Hypnotherapy can be used to reduce stress in the sufferer which can often be a facctor but also give their mind greater control over the symptoms and reactions of IBS.
